Lisetta Carmi (1924-2022, Italy) was an Italian photographer who conceived her practice as a political engagement and as an anthropological investigative tool. Carmi was the first to document the LGBTQIA+ community in Italy during a time in which gender identity was a taboo, and her photographs, created within a relationship of profound esteem and friendship, narrate without artifacts or staging the lives of those who strive towards recognition by enduring «incredible states of loneliness» (Carmi, 1972).
